Last week our pastor spoke on the second half of Galatians five and the idea of walking in the Spirit. His series on Galatians has been talking about legalism and how man made rules always lower God's standards as opposed to adding to them. This caused our small group to discuss if there is any role for rules now that we have the Spirit. I would like to know what you think and why!
I can see where he's coming from, especially in light of the second half of Matthew 5, where Jesus seems to say it's not enough to not break the law, you have to not want to break it.
ReplyDeleteI think rules have value though, because people tend to hear the voice of God telling them to do the things they wanted to do anyway. We have trouble telling the flesh and the Spirit apart. The list of fruits of the flesh are pretty closely correlated with listings of laws in the Bible. So rules serve as guideposts that point to the Spirit.
